{"id":26,"date":"2026-08-16T12:19:05","date_gmt":"2026-08-16T12:19:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rebecca.brione.co.uk\/?page_id=26"},"modified":"2026-08-16T13:50:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-16T13:50:56","slug":"books","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/rebecca.brione.co.uk\/index.php\/books\/","title":{"rendered":"Books"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"175\" height=\"268\" src=\"http:\/\/rebecca.brione.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Book-cover-image-e1786879147994.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image of the front cover to Narratives of Consent and Reproductive Subjects: Tales of invisibility.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2025, Routledge published <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Narratives-of-Consent-and-Reproductive-Subjects-Tales-of-Invisibility\/Halliday-Brione-Nicholls\/p\/book\/9781032202648\">Narratives of Consent and Reproductive Subjects: Tales of invisibility<\/a><\/em>, which I edited with Prof. Samantha Halliday and Dr. Jacqueline Nicholls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The book brings together perspectives from across multiple disciplines to show how people engaging with reproductive healthcare &#8211; reproductive subjects &#8211; are too often rendered invisible by the law, by the healthcare professionals treating them, and by society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It explores the contours of consent in England and Wales, focussing on how reproductive subjects are othered, treated differently due to their skin colour, their genetic makeup, the fact that they have a serious mental illness and their desire to parent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A review in  Medical Law International called the book <em>&#8220;a sophisticated and genuinely multidisciplinary exploration of consent&#8221;<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medical Law Review described it as <em>&#8220;a comprehensive overview of the core issues that impact women today&#8230;essential reading for anyone who interacts with women in the reproductive health context&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My own chapter, on the maternity care experiences of women dealing with complex social and health circumstances was described in Medical Law International as <em>&#8220;particularly illuminating&#8221;; a chapter which &#8220;powerfully demonstrates how [people&#8217;s] experiences [of risk framing and labelling, and invasive examinations] intersect, exposing the structural conditions undermining meaningful consent&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have also contributed to a number of other books, including <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomsburyprofessional.com\/uk\/womens-birthing-bodies-and-the-law-9781509937578\/\">Women\u2019s Birthing Bodies and the Law: Unauthorised Intimate Examinations, Power and Vulnerability<\/a><\/em>; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uk.elsevierhealth.com\/communication-in-midwifery-9780323883993.html\">Communication in Midwifery: Theory and Practice<\/a><\/em>, and the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/broadlyconceived.wordpress.com\/broadly-conceived-edited-collection\/\"><em>Broadly Conceived<\/em> collection on New Directions in Reproduction Studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2025, Routledge published Narratives of Consent and Reproductive Subjects: Tales of invisibility, which I edited with Prof. Samantha Halliday and Dr. Jacqueline Nicholls.
